An email from a public-sector member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) went out to the organization’s digital network today, reaching allies and members across a union that boasts 2 million workers. It tells recipients not to shop at Target because of Target’s past political donations and the company’s choice to follow laws and regulations, including ones concerning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The email asks people to sign a pledge to not shop at Target for the rest of the back-to-school shopping season and reads, “We have the power to hold companies accountable, and when they rig the system against working people, immigrants, and our communities, we take our money elsewhere.” The union member and educator writing the note also wrote, “I know firsthand that greedy corporations only listen when their bottom line is at stake.”
Target employees are not SEIU union members. So targeting Target is not about members’ wages or working conditions. I hope SEIU realizes that damaging a company that employs more than 400,000 employees could harm those employees and prospective ones.
This is another example of a union don’t.
