WPC Young Professionals awards third annual charter school scholarship to two Summit Sierra seniors

To support the incredible work of Summit Sierra charter school in Seattle and to acknowledge their hard-working students, Washington Policy Center’s Young Professionals awarded two $2,500 scholarships early this month. Located in Seattle’s International District, 100% of Summit Sierra’s first graduating senior class in 2019 was accepted to four-year colleges and universities. The school continues to thrive today, producing a 98% college acceptance rate among its 2020 and 2021 graduates.

WPC Young Professionals exists to educate, engage, and empower the next generation of policy, business, and community leaders. We believe access to quality education is key to empowering students and providing equal opportunity in academic life and beyond.

“To honor the work of Summit Sierra’s success as a public charter school and their 2021 graduating class, we are proud to award our third annual high school scholarship! Recipients may use the scholarship to pay for tuition at their college, university, or trade school,” said WPC president Dann Mead Smith.

The 2021 recipients are Evelyn Heckman and Jibrel Isse. In a recorded presentation for Summit Sierra’s virtual graduation ceremony on June 10th, WPC YP Director Marissa Gaston discussed how Evelyn and Jibrel impressed WPC’s scholarship selection committee with “their leadership initiative, academic excellence, community engagement, and knowledge of policy.” Evelyn will study computer science at University of Washington, Seattle, and Jibrel will study applied computing at University of Washington, Bothell.

Congratulations to our 2021 recipients!
