Washingtonians deserve more opportunities to help students and schools in their communities. The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program empowers every taxpayer to direct their federal tax dollars toward K-12 educational expenses and receive a credit worth up to $1,700—at no additional cost to schools or the state budget.
More than 30 states are participating in 2027. If Washington joins them, students and their schools could receive additional funding for tutoring, special education services and therapies, transportation, books, classroom supplies, tuition, after-school programs and many more educational expenses.
This is a no-lose opportunity for Washington students, families, and schools. No existing state or local education funding will be affected. The program simply keeps additional education resources paid for with our federal tax dollars in our state to benefit students and their schools. Because most Washington students attend public schools, public school families and classrooms stand to gain the most from this program—which is estimated to generate more than $700 million annually.
Governor Ferguson needs to opt our state into the program now. Otherwise, federal taxpayers will direct their donations worth a projected $700 million to students and schools in participating states like Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and New York.
