Given that less than half of the long-term-care payroll tax exemption applications filed have been processed — and the new tax hits paychecks in January — an Employment Security Department spokesman assured me last week that there are contingency plans in place “to process the exemption requests in time.”

Today, the WA Cares Fund website offered more clarification. It carried an updated exemption message that reads, “If you’ve completed your application for an exemption from WA Cares on or before Dec. 1, ESD will process it before premiums take effect in January,” and, “we can only guarantee we’ll process your application before the end of the year if you submit on or before Dec. 1.”

Take note and get your exemption application in if you have private long-term-care insurance.
