SPOKANE – Former Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joseph Lieberman will be featured at Washington Policy Center’s gala dinner event on Wednesday, October 24^th at the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane. Washington Policy Center (WPC), the state’s top public policy research organization, made the announcement today and promised additional high-profile speaker announcements would follow.

“Senator Lieberman is widely respected for his commitment to put country above party and for working to put aside partisan rancor to get things done,” said WPC president Dann Mead Smith.

Joseph Lieberman was elected to the United States Senate from Connecticut in 1988 and served until 2012. He was nominated by former Vice President Al Gore to be his running mate in the 2000 Presidential Election, winning the popular vote on the Democratic ticket but falling short in the electoral college to then-Texas Governor George W. Bush. In the 2008 presidential campaign, he spoke out forcefully against the election of then-Senator Barack Obama and was considered a potential Vice Presidential choice for Republican nominee Senator John McCain. Senator Lieberman is one of the few Americans who have spoken at the conventions of both political parties.

A graduate of Yale Law School, Senator Lieberman has been a forceful voice for school choice options for families, calling it “not a partisan issue, but an American issue.” While in the Senate, Senator Lieberman was one of the chamber’s leading foreign policy voices, leading the Homeland Security committee and serving on the Senate Armed Services committee. His independent stands and willingness to cross party lines made Senator Lieberman one of the nation’s most respected statesmen.

WPC’s Annual Dinner is one of the largest events of its kind in the region, regularly attracting more than 1,000 citizens, business owners, elected officials and community leaders from across the state. Current Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who was honored at WPC’s Annual Dinner in Spokane in 2016, remarked “we need Washington Policy Center, we need think tanks to calmly look at things and bring forward good ideas.”
