Washington Charter School Commission holds first meeting

Relevant Topics

The new nine-member state Charter School Commission held its first meeting on April 4th in Olympia. The commission has set up a website, here. Their meeting focused on reviewing essential laws and procedures. The agenda for the April 4 meeting is available here.

The meeting started off with a presentation by Dave Stolier, Senior Assistant Attorney General and Aileen Miller, Assistant Attorney General. They described the provisions of Initiative 1240, the charter school law passed by voters last fall. They also covered laws governing the procedures of the commission and its members. Jack Archer of the State Board of Education reviewed proposed rules to implement various requirements of I-1240.

The commission is making rapid progress. July 1, 2013 is the deadline for school districts to file applications to become charter school authorizers. The commission will review charter school applications from community groups starting November 22. Thirteen school districts have indicated interest in becoming authorizers, as I reported here, so the continuing work of the commission is vitally important.

The commission is holding its second meeting today, at the Bellevue Art Museum. It ends this evening at 5:00 pm. I’ll report on that meeting tomorrow.
