The Tax Foundation recently released a new study on wireless fees and taxes. Their research shows that these type of taxes increased sharply in 2019, and that Washington state has one of the highest wireless tax rates in the country. Washington’s taxes and fees account for, on average, 28.8% of a customer’s wireless bill. Only customers in Illinois pay a higher rate at 31.2%.

These numbers are significantly higher than past years, amounting to a 14% increase in the tax rate from 2018. The increase is largely due to an increase in the surcharge that wireless carriers are required to pay to support the Federal Universal Service Fund.
