"Medicare for All" on Steroids

Just when you thought Senator Bernie Sander’s (I-VT) “Medicare for All” plan was ambitious, along come 100 progressive U.S. House Democrats with an even more unrealistic single-payer plan. (here) This latest “Medicare for All” bill was released today. Last year, 120 Democrats co-sponsored Sander’s plan in the House, including some moderates.

This latest version is very aggressive. The bill would eliminate all private health insurance (including employer-paid plans), would provide for dental and vision services, would pay for prescription drugs, would pay for long-term care, and would allocate federal taxpayer dollars for abortion services. There would be no co-pays, no deductibles, and no premiums. Except for people enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service, if you like your current health insurance, you won't be able to keep it.

The bill would take effect in two years. It will receive two committee hearings in the House next month.

One small problem with the bill – no funding mechanism is included. In other words, the bill was announced today with its financing to-be-determined. Sander’s plan would devastate the U.S. economy and still be $32 trillion short over 10 years. The House Democrat bill would, without a doubt, cause even greater destruction of the economy.

Progressives want to push their agenda. Yet there is very little chance of this bill passing the U.S. House. You have to believe that moderate Democrats who won in 2018 will not walk-the-plank for this ridiculous bill. There is absolutely no way the bill, even if it did pass in the House, would pass in the U.S. Senate.

It will be interesting to see if any of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates will support this plan.
