Senate Bill 5971 would add three energy taxes (and a number of other fees):
- A $15 per metric ton of CO2 carbon tax for gasoline, about 13 cents per gallon, beginning in 2020
- A $10 per metric ton of CO2 carbon tax for natural gas
- A traditional gas tax of 6 cents per gallon, beginning in 2019
The carbon tax is not bound by the 18th Amendment to the state constitution, and can be used for any purpose legislators decide.
