US Senator introduces a bill to provide funding for rural broadband during COVID-19

Senate Bill 3569, introduced last week would create a $2 billion fund to help rural broadband providers provide free or subsidized internet services to low income residents.

“The Keeping Critical Connections Act would help small broadband providers continue offering free or discounted broadband services to families and students in rural areas to ensure they remain connected to school, work, and their communities during this period of economic turmoil caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., the bill’s sponsor, said in a press release.

This along with the recent announcement from the FCC on allowing temporary expansion of the broadband spectrum, means internet service providers in rural areas of Washington will have the tools to help residents who are struggling at home with internet connectivity.

The internet has become a lifeline to those either out of work or for those who are now working at home during the COVID-19 crisis. For lower income Washington residents, the extra money comes at a time when there are tough financial choices to be made.

The additional funding will enable smaller rural internet service providers to maintain their customer base and help keep the doors open.
