Justifying Washington Cap-and-Trade with European Myths and Shoddy Science
Todd Myers, Director, Center for the Environment
, March, 2009As the legislature considers approaches to reduce Washington's greenhouse gas emissions, environmental activists and the Department of Ecology are reassuring them about the cap-and-trade system they are considering. That system, which has been in place in Europe for years, has not lived up to the promises being made in Olympia. This month, the Environmental Watch examines four prominent claims made before the legislature about climate change and cap-and-trade. Unfortunately, the information the legislature is receiving is either inaccurate or misleading. Unless we honestly address the failures of cap-and-trade in Europe, that system is likely to be more expensive and less effective than promised.
