August 7 - Discovery Institute fellow Wesley J. Smith, renowned scholar on animal rights and bioethics.

Washington Policy Center is pleased to co-present these events, which are hosted by Discovery Institute.

These lectures are part of the Gorton Summer Lecture Series, named for the Discovery Institute's distinguished board member and former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton. The series introduces young people to the nature and ideals of public service. While attendance is open to anyone, the series is targeted at those with an interest in public policy and who are preparing or have just begun their professional careers.

These events will be held from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. at Discovery Institute, located at 208 Columbia Street in downtown
Seattle
. Though the Discovery Institute cannot validate, parking is available in the Millennium Tower Garage (719 2nd Avenue - entrance on Columbia). Should you choose to park elsewhere, please verify the garage hours as many of the adjacent parking lots close at 6:00 p.m. The location is also metro accessible. Refreshments will be

We are pleased to have acclaimed author Bjørn Lomborg as our keynote speaker. Mr. Lomborg’s best sellers include Cool It and The Skeptical Environmentalist. He was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2004 and one of the "50 people who could save the planet" by the UK Guardian in 2008. The Daily Telegraph called The Skeptical Environmentalist "... probably the most important book on the environment ever written." In 2004 he started the Copenhagen Consensus, a conference of Nobel prize winning economists who come together to prioritize the best solutions for the world's greatest challenges. The event will also feature two panels addressing climate change and ecofads.

Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic

Since 2003, Vaclav Klaus has served as President of the Czech Republic.  Previously he served as the country’s Finance Minister and Prime Minister, presiding over the peaceful post-communist separation of the Czechoslovak Federation into the modern Czech and Slovak Republics.  He is the author of a provocative new book on environmental policy, Blue Planet in Green Shackles.  His views on inflation, monetary and fiscal policies, comparative economic systems, and economic transformation have been published in many scholarly journals in his homeland and elsewhere.
