Initiative Analysis

Initiative 1000 – I-1000 would legalize physician assisted suicide in Washington State.  I-1000 would allow a primary care physician who has diagnosed a patient as terminally ill to give the patient life ending drugs.  The physician must determine that the patient is competent and making a voluntary request. The request and diagnoses must be confirmed by a consulting physician.  I-1000 would require multiple oral requests and one written request from a patient.  I-1000 also removes any criminal or civil liabilities from the primary care physician for involvement in this process.
