Not responding to 911 - When Government failure endangers our communities

June 25, 2020

SEATTLE–On Sunday night in Seattle, a group of protestors broke into a local car repair shop, Car Tender, with the intent of stealing as much cash as possible and ultimately burn the business down. The owner of the business was able to subdue the individuals and extinguish the fire before it engulfed the building, though looters did get away with cash and other valuables.

This small business is located just outside the declared Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) which city officials have declared a police "no go" zone. Still, when the business owner called 911 the operator informed him that police would not be coming. The business owner got the same response after calling the fire department.

This left the owner, with family and a few friends, alone to defend the property against a crowd of over 200 protestors, some with the intent to destroy the business.

The property was later rushed by the crowd and the perimeter fence was destroyed.

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed, and with some help from family and some of the more sensible protestors the crowd retreated, and the business was left standing.

This dangerous situation is a direct result of the policies of the City of Seattle and State of Washington deciding not to enforce the laws of the City and the State. We are continually told to "stay safe," but when a business owner called 911 for help, he was left on his own.

The decisions made by the Seattle Council not to provide services to the Capitol Hill area are putting the residents and small businesses in harm's way and endangering the public. Residents of Capital Hill are paying taxes for Police and Fire services and the City should be providing those services to ensure the area is safe.
