Sold-Out Health Care Conference Sets the Stage for Blue Ribbon Commission

Seattle - Washington Policy Center, the State's premier public policy research organization held it's 4th Annual Health Care Conference, "Moving Health Care Forward: Tools and Techniques for a Healthier Washington," today in SeaTac. At the sold-out Conference, attended by over 250 people, business owners, legislators, agency and legislative staff, patients, doctors and industry representatives debated long-standing health care issues as well as newer challenges arising because of developments in medicine and technology.

The Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission first meeting was held shortly after today's Conference. The Blue Ribbon Commission is charged with finding ways to provide accessible, affordable and quality health care for Washingtonians. By December 1st, this new commission is expected to present to the Governor and Legislature a five year plan to substantially improve health care access in the State.

We expect the commission to consider some of the concerns and frustrations expressed at today's Conference. Some fundamental issues brought up by panelists and attendees include reforming Medicate, deregulating the health insurance market, examining parts of Massachusetts' Health Plan, promoting patient focused care, and consumer access to health care cost and quality. The Conference created an open forum for attendees to attempt to resolve their aggravation with these problems. By the number of people at the Conference and the tone of the questions, it is clear that Washington residents are frustrated and eager for action and resolution of health care issues.

"The Blue Ribbon Commission faces a demanding deadline for a problem the State has been grappling with for several decades," said President Dann Mead Smith. "While it indicates it is open to big ideas, six months is not adequate and not having private sector representation constricts its ability to sufficiently consider all viable options."

"With four members, including the chair, of the Blue Ribbon Commission present at today's Washington Policy Center Conference, it is clear it too is looking for ways to resolve some of Washington's health care crises. Let's hope it is up to the task," said Center for Health Care Reform Director Tanya Karwaki.
