Dr. Richard Johnson, Professor, History Department, University of Washington
Sandra O. Archibald, Dean of the University of Washington Evans School of Public Affairs will introduce the event

Panelists will discuss the importance of civics education in light of a recent ISI civic literacy report, Failing Our Students, Failing America: Holding Colleges Accountable for Teaching America’s History and Institutions, showing many students lack even basic knowledge of our government and how it works.

This report and the work by Prof. Manweller for WPC shows that college seniors, on average, failed in the subject areas of America’s history, government, international relations, and market economy, with an average score of 53.2%. The research includes 14,000 students at 50 colleges and universities, including the University of Washington and Gonzaga University— in many cases, graduating students knew less about their government than when they started as freshmen.

American freedom will survive only if each generation understand its founding principles and the sacrifices made to maintain it. Failing Our Students, Failing America asks the question: Are we preparing the next generation to maintain our democracy?

This free event will be held on the University of Washington campus and is open to the public.
