Oil tax constitutional amendment flying through
February 8, 2012
A bill that proposes a constitutional amendment to protect oil tax revenue for highway purposes has bipartisan support and is flying through the legislature. Proposed on February 3rd, the bill has already passed the Transportation Committee and will now be considered by the full House.
This protection is consistent with WPC's recommendation to limit taxes and fees paid by drivers to highway purposes only. Drivers have their own unmet infrastructure needs. Alternative travel modes should be funded by their own users (which reduces the public subsidy) or through local options that apply to the general public, like sales taxes.
